American Airlines Emotional Support Animal Forms and Requirements

American Airlines follows and supports the Department of Transportation's minimum requirements when flying with emotional support animals (ESAs). However, they also have some discretion on how they may verify an emotional support animal before your trip.

American Airlines Emotional Support Animal Forms

Along with your emotional support animal letter, these three (3) forms must be completed, submitted and received by the airline within 48 hours before your flight. Fax forms to: 817-967-4715. They will notify you when your documents are approved.

  1. Medical Mental Health Professional Form
  2. Veterinary Health Form, or vaccination record with current rabies vaccination information
  3. Confirmation of Animal Behavior Form (Handler Form)

If you're not working with a licensed mental health professional to complete the Medical Mental Health Professional Form and or obtain a prescription ESA letter, we recommend using Chilhowee Psychological Services (CPS). CPS is the original and most trusted and referred online provider of prescription emotional support animal letters.

American Airline ESA Requirements

American Airline Emotional Support Dogs and Animals may fly in the cabin at no charge if they meet these requirements:

  1. One (1) emotional support animal per person.
  2. Animal may be either a cat or dog; 4 months or older.
  3. Animal must be clean and well-behaved.
  4. Animal must fit at your feet, under your seat or in your lap.
  5. If the animal is in a kennel, it must fit under the seat in front of you with the animal in it.

ESAs may not:

  1. Be seated in an exit row
  2. Protrude into or block aisles
  3. Occupy a seat
  4. Eat from tray tables

If your ESA doesn't fit within the allowed spaces, you may need to:

  1. Rebook on flight with more open seats
  2. Buy a ticket for the animal
  3. Transport the animal as a checked pet.

Emotional support animals MUST always be in control by leash and/or harness. Check out our different colored, TSA friendly ESA dog vests and emotional support animal leashes below.
